Exterior Painting Costs in NZ

Exterior rates run higher than interior because the paint system, prep, and access are all heavier.

• Coating durability - Exterior paint needs to handle UV, rain, temperature swings, and damp. That means premium exterior-grade products - see Master Painters NZ guidelines on exterior coating systems.
• Heavier prep - Water-blasting, scraping, mould treatment, and sanding back to a sound surface all take longer than interior work. On older homes, prep can be 40–60% of the total labour.
• Access and safety - Two-storey homes, steep sites, and split-level builds need scaffold setups plus harness gear. See the scaffolding section below for costs.
• Primer and system build - Bare timber and weathered surfaces need a full primer coat before topcoats. Skipping primer saves a day but costs years of coating life.

Prep and access are the two biggest variables in most exterior quotes.

• Peeling or flaking paint - Needs scraping back to a sound edge, sanding, and spot-priming. On a full house this can double the prep time.
• Timber rot and damaged weatherboards - Rotten boards need replacing or filling before paint starts. Carpentry repairs are quoted separately - $500–$2,000+.
• Mould, lichen, and heavy washing - South-facing walls and shaded areas often need chemical treatment and a thorough water-blast. Budget extra time on damp-prone sites.
• Crack repairs on plaster and stucco - Hairline cracks need filling and sealing. Larger cracks needs a plasterer first, adding a separate trade cost.

• Coastal salt exposure - Salt damage needs treating before paint goes on, and the paint system must be rated for salt-spray resistance.
• Dark colours or full colour changes - Three coats instead of two, adding roughly 30–40% more paint and labour.

A proper exterior quote should cover:

• Wash / water-blast - Remove dirt, mould, lichen, and loose material.
• Scraping and sanding - Flaking areas scraped back to a sound edge and sanded smooth.
• Priming - Spot priming on bare timber and repairs. Full priming if the substrate is exposed or patchy.
• Minor filling and repairs - Small cracks, nail holes, and imperfections. Major timber or plaster work should be a separate line item.
• Two topcoats - Exterior-grade paint on all surfaces in scope. Three coats if changing colour.
• Access equipment - Scaffold, ladders, or harness gear. Confirm whether included or charged separately.
• Protection and clean-up - Drop sheets on decks, paths, and garden beds. Masking on windows and fittings. Site left tidy.

If a quote looks cheap, check what's been left out. Excluding washing, priming, or scaffold can make a price look 30–50% lower than one covering the full job.

Ladders only - Usually enough for single-storey homes with clear ground access.

Scaffolding - Two-storey homes almost always need full scaffold, $1,500–$4,000 depending on perimeter length and complexity.

Edge protection / harnesses - Required for steep rooflines, gable ends, or anywhere a fall risk exists. Some councils mandate edge protection above a certain height.

Factors that push access costs higher:

• Steep or sloping sites - Scaffold needs levelling and extra bracing.
• Conservatories, decks, or extensions - Scaffold must work around these, adding setup time.
• Limited perimeter access - Fences, retaining walls, or neighbouring buildings restrict placement.

Always check whether scaffolding is included in the quote or listed as a separate line item.

NZ has some of the highest UV levels in the world, and exterior coatings take constant punishment from rain, salt, and temperature swings. The right system for the surface matters more than saving $20 per tin.

• Weatherboard - Flexible, UV-resistant acrylic. Primer on bare timber plus two topcoats minimum. Semi-gloss finishes (e.g. Resene Sonyx 101, Dulux Weathershield) shed water and resist mould better than flat.
• Plaster / stucco - Breathable coating that lets moisture escape. Elastomeric paints handle hairline crack movement well.
• Coastal homes - Salt-spray-rated system essential. Repainting cycles run 5–7 years near the coast vs 8–12 inland, so durability pays for itself.
• Roofs - Specialist roof paint with heat-reflective properties. Rust-inhibiting primer on any exposed or corroded areas first.
